- The aim of the grant is to partially cover costs for activities directly related to the care of urupā including but not limited to the following:
- Repair and maintain gateways, fences, footpaths, etc.;
- Maintain, clean, repair and restore headstones, install berms, etc.;
- Maintain, repair or replace existing ground maintenance equipment;
- Maintain, repair or improve pedestrian and vehicular access and parking; and
- Maintain urupā lawns, hedges, tress, etc., and remove green waste.
The Grant cannot be used for:
- Multiple-year projects;
- Payment of salaries, wages, commission, fees, etc.; and
- Protection - and capital-related (one-off) activities, etc.

- Only 1 (one) application per urupā will be accepted this year/round.
- Please ensure all relevant sections of the Application Form are completed.
- A * (red asterisk) indicates the field must be completed.
- Please ensure you have attached any documents referred to in your application.
- Note that if your application is successful, you will need to provide evidence that all activities have been completed.
- And the information in your application may be made publicly available as part of Council’s decision-making processes.
Assessment and Decisions
Please note that if the urupā requires new fencing, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), or large-scale clearance work, we encourage you to apply to the Cultural Heritage Protection Fund. This enables the Manaaki Urupā Grant to be focused on ongoing maintenance.
The Council's Iwi Relationships Team will lead the assessment of applications. You will be notified of the final decision as soon as possible via the email address you provide in this application form.
- For grants under $10,000 the decision is made via officer delegation
- For grants over $10,000 the decision making will go through Te Huinga Taumatua
